The Immersive Healthcare Collaboration is a network of scientists, healthcare practitioners, educators, and engineers, committed to the development of immersive technology applications in healthcare. Our members develop best practice guidelines for research and development in VR/AR healthcare.
1
To maximise the potential of immersive technologies in healthcare, these technologies must be developed with clear requirements and goals in mind. The development of these requirements should be informed by the science of human cognition, and our developing understanding of the psychology human-computer interaction.
2
Successful implementation requires understanding the context into which the technology will be embedded, the barriers and enablers for adoption, and the sociotechnical factors associated with acceptance and use. As a minimum, evaluation must rigorously demonstrate that the technology is effective in meeting its goals and has no undesirable additional effects.
3
Given the rapid rate at which immersive technology is developing, research outputs from groups and manufacturers working in isolation may result in limited impact and unnecessary duplication of effort. We propose collaborative efforts that create a culture of inclusivity and solidarity across the immersive healthcare community to speed up progress and widen the uptake of best practices.
In 2021, the Immersive Healthcare Collaboration developed a set of guiding principles to support progress on immersive technology applications in healthcare education and training.
